A Chance Encounter and the Magic of Community
On my bike ride home the other day, I went through The Forks—and by pure chance, I spotted a couple from France, fully loaded with gear for a long-distance bike tour. Naturally, I had to stop and ask about their journey. What followed was a wonderful conversation, and before parting ways, I invited them to join us the next morning for Coffee Outside. To my delight, they showed up!
The Coffee Outside crew didn’t disappoint. Seeing Sebastian and Lisa chatting with our regulars—in both English and French—warmed my heart. There’s something special about strangers becoming friends over a shared love of adventure and a good cup of coffee.
This time of year, we often see bike packers passing through Winnipeg on epic journeys. My hope? That word spreads in touring circles: "Build in an extra day in Winnipeg—the people are amazing! Look them up, and they’ll welcome you with coffee, a beer, or even lunch. They’ll swap stories, offer local tips, and make you feel at home."
I hope Sebastian and Lisa leave with the same love for Winnipeg that we have—a city that’s warm, welcoming, and full of unexpected connections.
Moments like these are exactly why I’m so passionate about biking. It’s not just about the ride; it’s about the people you meet along the way. So next time you’re out on your bike, take a chance and say hello to someone new. You never know where the conversation might lead!
