How do I do it?
How it starts: “I HATE getting my photograph taken!”
How it ends: “Thanks that was great!”
Whenever I photograph a team, on location or in my studio there is always one person who greets me this way.
Over the years I’ve had others ask me, how do you make people relax in front of your camera?
I’ve taken a hard look at myself and my process and have come up with 4 attributes key to my success:
Curiosity
Empathy
Attention
Intention
Curiosity- I genuinely enjoy meeting people from all walks of life. It’s really the best part of my job! I love to learn about what they do, what motivates them, what moves them.
Empathy- I understand how daunting standing in front of a camera can be. It can feel like a very vulnerable moment. Sometimes it takes sharing some of the results on a laptop to diffuse that tension. I direct subjects in posing so that they can relax and concentrate on putting their best selves forward
Attention- I obsess over the small details, how the tie knot is, how the bangs fall, wether we have hair over the should or in front. Its these little things that all add up. If the project involves my hair and makeup team, then a few of us obsess over each subject
Intention- This means approaching a portrait with an understanding of what’s needed. This could be based upon your personality, or the brands attributes, or the industry you are in. Working with intention is often what makes the difference.
